Black Fire burns near Roosevelt

As of Monday morning, July 15, the Black Fire near Roosevelt Lake was estimated at 5,900 acres after overflight mapping. The fire started on July 11 by lightning and is spreading south into the Superstition Wilderness and north and east toward Highway 188.

As of press time there are several communities and powerlines threatened and evacuations are in effect. The Central West Zone Type 3 Incident Management Team assumed command on Sunday, July 14.

Crews are focused on structure protection, including the Lakeview Mobile Home Park, ranches on the east side of the fire, and the Tonto National Monument. Stage 1 Fire Restrictions are in effect for the Tonto, Coconino and Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests, as well as other jurisdictions.

The following evacuations were in effect at press time: Roosevelt Lakeview RV Park, SET, Roosevelt Lake Marina, SET, Tonto National Monument, GO, Black Brush Ranch, GO, Cross-P Ranch, GO, Reevis Mountain School, GO. The following Tonto Basin Recreation sites were in GO status: Cottonwood Cove Picnic Area, Fraser Horse Camp and Group Site, Windy Hill Campground (the boat ramp will remain open), Schoolhouse Campground (boat ramp closed), Grapevine Campground (boat ramp closed). The Cholla Campground boat ramp is open for use. The Tonto Basin Ranger Station is closed until further notice due to the fire.

The fire is expected to continue spreading south into the Superstition Wilderness and north and east toward Hwy 188.

The Tonto National Monument will remain closed until conditions are safe for staff and visitors.
