Last Friday afternoon, August 15, Liberty High School in Globe was put on lockdown for approximately two hours as Globe Police officers searched the campus for rumored handguns.
Around 1:07 p.m., officers arrived at the school in response to a student reportedly having a gun on campus. The gun was found to be a toy; however, during the investigation rumors surfaced of other students possessing handguns on campus. School staff placed the campus on lockdown, and multiple police vehicles including a K9 unit responded for a search as parents waited in the parking lot to pick up their children. No other weapons were found, according to the Globe Police Department.
“LHS staff were made aware of a possible threat to campus safety,” Liberty High School said in a statement on the school’s website, adding that police were “immediately notified.” A Police Department press release said charges would be submitted to the Gila County Attorney’s Office in the case.
