With the big Copper Kettle game between Globe and Miami coming up next week, the Miami Vandals took care of business Friday night with a 32-14 home win against the Chandler Prep Titans. Miami held a 16-8 lead at halftime, then dominated Chandler Prep 16-6 in the second half.
The Vandals' victory was sparked by two seniors, quarterback Abram Castaneda and wide receiver Deray Mathis. Castaneda threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns, one to Mathis and one to sophomore Ryder Guerrero. Castaneda also ran for two scores, finishing the game with 118 yards on 16 carries. Mathis hauled in nine passes for 175 yards, including his touchdown catch. A third Miami senior, running back Aiden Goss, contributed 70 yards on 15 carries.
With Friday's win, Miami's record stands at 1-2 heading into the Copper Kettle game at Globe, where the Vandals hope to retain the Kettle after winning it last year. Next Friday will also be the Vandals' first against a Section 2A Black opponent and one of two “Ken Vargas Nights,” in honor of the late Miami basketball coach, this season.
The rival Globe Tigers played the night before Miami's win, visiting the Tombstone Yellow Jackets. It was a different outcome for the Tigers, who fell 34-7 to the Yellow Jackets. Tombstone led by only a touchdown at halftime, 14-7, but shut Globe out 20-0 in the second half.
No game statistics for Globe were available at press time. On the season, senior Jeremiah Foster leads the Tigers in scoring with three rushing touchdowns and in total yards with 229, averaging 76 a game.
