The Friday night lights were shining at Globe High School’s Harbison Field, where the Tigers varsity football team hosted the Arete Prep Chargers, and at Tombstone High School, where the San Carlos Braves traveled.
In Globe, Friday night saw a scoreless first quarter. In the quarter, Arete Prep kept one drive going with a successful fake punt but ended up turning it over on downs.
The Chargers broke the scoring ice with 4:22 left in the second quarter, with a five-yard rushing touchdown and extra point for a 7-0 lead.
The Tigers answered with 3:00 left in the third quarter with a 15-yard rushing touchdown by senior Jeremiah Foster, who racked up 108 yards on 19 carries. A two-point conversion try failed, leaving the Chargers ahead 7-6 – which, after the teams traded interceptions in the fourth quarter (the first one made by Globe’s Jaeger Franco), would stand as the final score.
The Tigers are now 1-2, and 0-1 in Section 2A Black. Their next game will be September 12 at the Tombstone Yellow Jackets, who hosted San Carlos Friday night.
In that game, the Braves fell to Tombstone 58-6. No game statistics for San Carlos were available at press time. The Yellow Jackets rushed for 370 yards and five touchdowns.
After their season-opening victory, the Braves are also 1-2. However, they remain unbeaten in Section 2A Black at 1-0 and are in second place behind the Pima Roughriders. The Braves’ next game will be September 13, at home versus the Pinon Eagles.
