Vandals overcome Tigers to retain Copper Kettle

Whether it's called the Battle for the Copper Kettle or the Copper Kettle Classic, the big Globe-Miami football game went down Friday night at Harbison Field – and the coveted kettle will stay at Miami High School for another year as the Miami Vandals overcame the Globe Tigers 30-19.

The Tigers were driving at the end of a scoreless first quarter, but the drive came up empty as they were forced to punt early in the second.

The Vandals then went on their own drive, but were thwarted when Globe's Esteban Garcia intercepted an Abram Castaneda pass.

Miami broke the scoring ice with 4:12 left in the first half, on a long punt return by Deray Mathis. Castaneda ran it in for a two-point conversion, giving Miami an 8-0 lead.

Globe came right back, however, closing the lead to two with a touchdown run by quarterback Jaeger Franco with 2:11 left in the half. The Tigers' two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the score 8-6 Miami going into halftime.

A Castaneda touchdown pass with 8:20 left in the third quarter and a successful two-point conversion extended the Vandals' lead to 16-6.

Globe answered that score with a second rushing touchdown by Franco and an extra point, cutting the lead to 16-13.

Castaneda extended the Vandals' lead with another touchdown pass with 10:12 left in the fourth quarter. Miami led 22-13 after a failed two-point conversion, then recovered a Tiger fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Castaneda would then run it in for another score, followed by a two-point conversion, with 8:27 left in the fourth. Miami led 30-13.

With 7:10 left, Globe's Jeremiah Foster, who rushed for 134 yards on 29 carries, ran for a touchdown. Another unsuccessful two-pointer left the score at 30-19 Miami, which turned out to be the final score. A Vandal drive was stopped with 2:45 left when the Tigers recovered a Miami fumble inside Globe's 5-yard line.

With his three scores, Castaneda, a senior, keyed the Vandals' defense of the Copper Kettle they won last year. Another Miami senior, Aiden Goss, ran for 61 yards on 8 carries and caught two passes for 62 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown reception. Junior Noah Combs hauled in Castaneda's other touchdown pass, a 4-yarder.

Along with his two rushing scores, Globe's Franco, a junior, had 114 yards passing. The Tigers' top receiver Friday night was freshman Braden Wager with 3 catches for 59 yards. Foster, a senior, had 19 yards receiving to go with his 100+-yard rushing game.

“It was a heck of a game. We knew it was going to be pretty evenly matched and it came down to the kids just doing the Xs and the Os. Both sides did it well. It was just a few bounces went our way that didn't go their way and we ended up on top,” said Miami head coach Brandon Powell.

“Both sides left it all out there. It was a good physical game, and it was a good clean game,” said Globe head coach Brady Hoff. “Miami's kids came out and made more plays than us. Our offense stepped up and was able to move the ball but in big rivalry games the team that makes less mistakes wins. I was proud of the way we kept fighting, but we came up short."
