Ragus Field ceremony honors Coach Vargas and family

Posted

Friday night at Miami High School’s Ragus Stadium was more than just a Homecoming game for the Vandals varsity football team; it was an occasion to honor a great coach’s memory and offer best wishes to his family.

It was the Vandals’ second “Kenny Vargas Night” of the season, in tribute to the late Miami coach. For Friday’s game, Miami supporters were encouraged to wear their white T-shirts honoring Vargas, a longtime coach and teacher who was well-known and esteemed throughout the community, and many did. In his memory, the 50-yard line at Ragus Field was decked with new art provided by Joe Cruz  – “VARGAS” spelled out in grand letters, and above that a pair of angel wings attached to a Vandals green “K.”

In tribute to the late Coach Vargas, Vandals players and coaches honored his memory and his family in a small pregame ceremony on the 50-yard line. There, the team presented flowers, small gifts and well-wishes to his wife, Evelyn Vargas, and other family members.
