At around noon Saturday, Buckey O’Neill Camp #175, Sons of Spanish-American War Veterans, dedicated a new memorial monument to veterans of that conflict in the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center Museum & Garden.
The event honored the 150th anniversary of the Spanish-American War in 2023, Spanish-American War veterans of Gila County and the Woman’s Relief Corps of Arizona.
The five-foot-tall monument, with a concrete base, aluminum plaque, stainless steel pyramid and bronze Spanish-American war cross, was built by RAM Specialists, LLC, of Miami. RAM Specialists’ Lucas Kannegaard, who said he had never done a monument before, was among Saturday’s speakers. Miami Mayor Jose “Angel” Medina and Bullion Plaza volunteer Bob Walish also marked the occasion with a few words. Avery Frantz, president of Buckey O’Neill Camp #175, welcomed guests and thanked the donors who helped realize the new memorial: RAM Specialists, Freeport McMoRan, the Margaret Warner Wood Tent #1 of Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War and individual donors.
