The Miami Vandals defeated rival Globe in five sets last week in front of a raucous crowd at Tiger Gymnasium.

They defeated the Tigers, 25-19, 25-18, 21-25, 11-25 and 17-15.

“I thought we executed set one and two really well but we had a mental breakdown,” said Miami head coach Jaymie Swift-Hooke. “I’m really glad that my girls rallied together and got back into it mentally.”

Set one and two belonged to the Vandals as they pulled away late in the sets behind the strong hitting of Layla Thompson. The third and fourth set went in favor of the Lady Tigers, who strung together runs behind their strong serving and Kaydance Tober’s strong play at the net.

The fifth set came down to the wire as both teams had opportunities to win. A shank ace by the Vandals sealed the win. There were multiple calls late in the match that affected both teams but each time, the teams rallied.

“It was super exciting,” said Globe head coach Lisa Hansen. “We’ve talked about  resiliency and pushing through no matter the outcome and talked to them about having confidence.”

The Lady Vandals improved to 4-0 in the regular season while Globe fell to 1-4.

The two rivals meet again on Oct. 14 at Miami High School.
