Tigers wrestling takes sixth in Thatcher meet

The Globe Tigers wrestling team competed at the Division IV, South Section meet at Thatcher High School last week.

As a team, the Tigers finished in sixth place with 97 team points.

Individually, two-time state champion Gabe Gonzales took first place in the 126-lb. weight class, defeating Bisbee’s Mason Richardson. In the 144-lb. weight class, Andrew Gonzales finished second place, falling to Morenci’s Breck Williams.

Anasco Escobedo-Sanchez finished second place in the 150-lb. weight class, falling in the final to Morenci’s John Provencio.

Sophomore Gary Perkins finished fourth place in the 120-lb. weight class, falling to Pima’s Jaxon McBiles in the third-place match. Fellow sophomore Esteban Garcia also finished fourth after falling to Pima’s Riley Flowers in the 132-lb. weight class.

All four wrestlers qualified for the state wrestling meet that starts this Thursday, Feb. 16 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix. The meet lasts through Saturday, Feb. 18.

Gabe Gonzales starts the meet against Connor Lueker from Round Valley, and Andrew Gonzales squares off against Page’s Daniel Szabo. Escobedo-Sanchez will take on Chino Valley’s Kaylo Crowser. Perkins will take on Parker’s Ryan Ponce; Garcia squares off with Round Valley’s Kinnly Colwell.
