The Globe High School Tigers picked up a big region win over the ALA-Anthem South Titans last week at home, 65-35, in front of a large crowd for Senior Night.

“We needed this win because we’ve been struggling the last four or five games, just scoring 40 points a game,” said Globe head coach Freddy Rios. “It was senior night and that was a big uplift. They came out with a lot of energy and just did what we needed.”

Globe’s Wendsler Nosie III scored for the Tigers before the Titans tied the game with a quick jumper. From there, it was an all-out Globe assault, scoring 16 straight points over the next six minutes for a commanding 18-2 lead off their full-court pressure.

“We wanted to put pressure and see how they would react,” said Rios. “We wanted to see if we could get some easy buckets and it worked.”

During the run, Brandon Shorty, Nosie III and Vaughn Lomayaktewa all scored, igniting the Globe faithful. The Titans scored with 28 seconds remaining in the first quarter but Globe’s Jarren Gibson nailed a three-pointer for a 21-4 first quarter lead.

The Tigers got a free throw from Nosie III to start the second quarter. ALA-Anthem South scored on a putback basket, but Lomayaktewa responded with a drive for two. Nosie III added his own putback before the Titans answered with a bucket.

From there Globe went on a 7-2 run, starting with a Shorty free throw and followed by six straight Nosie III points. The Titans ended their scoring drought at the 1:15 mark with a driving basket. The Tigers were quick to respond, as Josiah Cutter scored on a drive with less than a minute remaining in the first half.

The Tigers led 35-12 at halftime.

Globe’s offense continued hitting all the marks in the third quarter. led by Gibson. He knocked down four treys to propel the Tigers to a 59-24 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Three players scored in double figures, led by Nosie III with a game-high 25 points. Gibson added 17 while Lomayaktewa finished with 10.

“(Nosie III) had a lot of breakaway fast breaks and Jarren (Gibson) broke out of his slump and knocked down threes,” said Rios. “My point guard Vaughn (Lomayaktewa) is very good at controlling the tempo, finding the right people and protecting the basketball.”

The Tigers are still in the hunt for a 3A playoff spot. At press time, the Tigers were ranked 19th and had one more matchup with the Gilbert Christian Knights at home on Monday. Scores were not available at press time.
