The Globe High School Tigers hosted a multi-school wrestling meet last week at Tiger Gymnasium. The host team competed against Pima High School, Willcox High School, Benson High School, Hayden High School, and Miami High School.
“It was a good turnout because it started out with just four teams but Hayden and Miami requested to join us and it turned out to be a good deal,” said Globe coach Ruben Duarte.
Duarte said the addition of the two teams with the other four ensured that everyone wrestled, filling holes in weight classes across all the teams.
“My upperclassmen – Gabe Gonzales, Andrew Gonzales and Anasco Sanchez – performed well,” said Duarte. “We are prepping for the sectional meet.”
Gabe Gonzales, a senior, is a two-time state champion.
“I think the meet went good,” he said. “It was a good turnout and some good wrestling. I am excited for the rest of the postseason, just getting prepared for state.”
The Tigers have one more home meet, Jan. 25, before competing at the Tim Van Horne Memorial Wrestling Invitational this Friday and Saturday at Payson High School.
The Tim Van Horne Memorial will pit Globe against tough competition against schools from the Phoenix metro area as they prepare for the Division IV, South Section meet on Feb. 10 at Thatcher High School.
“I am a firm believer that you prepare your kids with good tournaments so that they are prepped for the sectional and state tournaments,” finished Duarte.
