The Globe High School Tigers survived an overtime scare from the San Carlos Braves last week in front of a capacity crowd at Tiger Gymnasium, escaping 73-71.

“San Carlos-Globe is always a barnburner and it doesn’t matter what league you’re in; it’s always an exciting game that typically goes to the last second,” said Globe head coach Freddy Rios.

The Tigers trailed 64-59 with less than a minute left in regulation, but came up big and nearly won on a last-second shot.

With 50 seconds left in regulation, Jerran Gibson was fouled attempting a three-pointer. He connected on three shots. Tayshaun Nosie scored on a fast-break layup after a San Carlos miss with 28 seconds left to tie the game.

With the game knotted at 64-all, both teams had a wild finish with back-to-back steals. The crucial Globe steal from Nosie led to Globe’s timeout with 14 seconds left. However, Gibson missed a jumper at the buzzer, forcing overtime.

Gibson came up huge in overtime with a corner three-pointer, while Tayshaun Nosie nabbed another steal and found Wendsler Nosie III for a layup and a 69-64 lead with 2:53 remaining.

Globe’s Brandon Shorty scored on a putback to open up a seven-point lead before the Braves made one last push. A foul against Globe put Leshawn Browning at the free throw line, where he knocked down one of two.

Another foul call put San Carlos at the line, but chaos ensued when Rios was whistled for his second technical, resulting in an ejection. San Carlos’ John Mull made both technical free throws to close within four.

San Carlos’ Browning had a putback with 22 seconds left to make it 71-69. San Carlos fouled the Tigers to stop the clock, putting Gibson at the line, where he knocked down a free throw for a three-point lead.

With just six seconds left in the game San Carlos’ Keyon Martin scored inside, but Globe’s Tayshaun Nosie made the first of two free throws before missing the second to allow the clock to run out.

“It was grit and the will to want to win the game,” said Rios of Globe’s resiliency. “You can’t coach that; it’s just a will that every one of those kids had in their hearts and they prevailed because of that.”

The capacity crowd was treated to a battle between two rival teams. Globe had the early advantage, jumping to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter before San Carlos rallied to tie the game with just 15 seconds left in the opening quarter. Globe’s Calvin Kindelay scored just before the buzzer for a 17-15 Tiger lead.

The second quarter was back and forth with Globe still holding a two-point lead at halftime.

The Braves opened up the third quarter with a game-changing 10-0 run fueled by Browning’s four points and a Mull triple. However, the Tigers put together their own run and maintained their two-point lead into the fourth quarter.

For seven minutes of the fourth quarter it was all San Carlos, but in the crucial final minute Globe made a comeback to force OT.

Wendsler Nosie III led the Tigers with a team-high 26 points, while Gibson added 21 including six triples and Shorty finished with 14 points.

San Carlos’ Mull had a game-high 33 points to lead three players in double figures. Browning added 15 and Martin finished with 12 points.

The two rivals will meet again on January 7 at San Carlos High School.
