The University of Arizona STEAM in Action project wants to thank the Globe Unified School District for hosting our first environmental science, public health, and justice youth training in Globe-Miami. Special thanks to High Desert Middle School principal and staff for hosting us, as well. Twenty students learned new environmental science skills, how to collect and analyze samples, and interpret and communicate the results. They prepared scientific posters and developed data visualizations about local environmental issues. They also learned about soils and how they are formed, the water cycle and water conservation practices, and Indigenous food sovereignty and meal preparation. Students earned micro-credentials from the University of Arizona they may add to their work/education experience. We also thank our guest speakers from the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Boyce Thompson Arboretum, and University of Arizona’s Project WET. 

We now look forward to launching youth advisory boards in Hayden/Winkelman and in Globe/Miami this August.  By participating, 7th-12th graders will learn to conduct informal science education, run quarterly meetings, and identify and address issues they consider important to their own communities.
