Lady Braves fall to #1 Lady Eagles in state semis

The season ended Friday afternoon for San Carlos Lady Braves basketball, who reached the 2A state championship semifinals before falling to the top-seeded Phoenix Country Day Lady Eagles 38-63 at Arizona Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Phoenix.

The Lady Braves enjoyed an outstanding 2023-24 season, going 26-4 and winning both the regular season and section tournament championship in Section 2A Valley, and were seeded fourth in the state playoffs.

However, the #1 Lady Eagles showed early why they were seeded first. They scored a basket on the game’s opening possession and never looked back. Phoenix Country Day led 16-4 at the end of the first quarter, with Olivia Owens putting up 11 points. It was a lead they would maintain: 28-15 at halftime, 46-27 at the end of three and 63-38 at the final buzzer.

Kylee Juan led the Lady Braves with 11 points and Caylee Longstreet added 10. San Carlos’ leading scorer on the season, Ellysia Cutter – who averaged 20.3 per game and reached her 1,000th point this year, was held to eight.

Next year, the Lady Braves and head coach Alvin Antonio will look to another successful season, with four starters – Cutter, Juan, Longstreet and Malia Antonio – returning, along with reserve Anaya Juan.

For the Lady Braves, Kylee Juan scored 11, Caylee Longstreet 10, Cutter 8 and Malia Antonio 7.
