A brand-new season of high school baseball and softball is around the bend in Globe, Miami and San Carlos.

The Globe Tigers, out to improve on last season’s 3-19-1 record, are hosting the San Carlos Braves – who went 0-15 in 2022-2023 - at Central Field on Monday, Feb. 26. The teams will meet on a field that Section 3A South Central coaches have voted Field of the Year three years in a row, a field Tigers head coach Wes Sukosky and his son Jonathan have been proudly maintaining.

The Tigers will then travel to Florence High School for the 37th annual Joe Padilla Baseball Tournament, taking on the host Florence Gophers Feb. 28, the Window Rock Fighting Scouts Feb. 29 and the San Manuel Miners March 1.

They’ll be joined in Florence by the Miami Vandals, coming off a 20-6 season that ended with a 4-3 loss to Phoenix Country Day in the state tournament. The Vandals, entering the season under a new coach, Rico Lorona, will play the Superior Panthers Feb. 28, the Morenci Wildcats Feb. 29 and the Thatcher Eagles March 1.

The Braves will follow up their visit to Globe’s Central Field with a Feb. 29 home game against the Fort Thomas Apaches.

Globe’s Lady Tigers softball team will start the season with two home games at Noftsger Hill Field, hosting the San Carlos Lady Braves on Feb. 26 and the San Miguel Lady Vipers on Feb. 27. Globe and San Carlos are coming off 16-13 and 3-11 seasons respectively. The San Carlos softballers will host the Fort Thomas Lady Apaches on Feb. 29.

The Lady Vandals’ season opens with a Feb. 26 road trip to Morenci, followed by a Feb. 28 home game versus San Tan Foothills and another road game, Feb. 29, at Santa Cruz Valley. Miami put up a 10-17 record last year, losing to the Bisbee Lady Pumas in the state championship’s play-in round.
