Lady Tigers volleyball sweeps Miami

The third chapter of the Globe-Miami rivalry series lacked the electrifying atmosphere from earlier this season when the two teams battled in a five-set thriller.

For the second time this season, Globe swept the Lady Vandals, 25-19, 25-16 and 25-22.

“We pulled it together and worked as a team,” said Lady Tiger Kaydance Tober. “Usually it’s long; we kept it short, which is sad, but I loved the atmosphere. Having the student sections brings the whole town together.”

After taking set one, Globe jumped to an early 3-0 lead behind a kill and block from Paxton Hansen. The lead quickly ballooned to 13-5, prompting a timeout from Miami. During that run, Tober had a kill, Hansen had a block, Emilee Satter served an ace and Miami committed seven unforced errors.

Following the timeout, Sonia Pichardo put away another kill for Globe that added to their lead. The Lady Tigers took an authoritative 18-6 lead after a pair of Miami hitting errors. After Miami chipped way and came within seven points, Globe called a timeout to regroup.

Miami’s Leeyah Goss’ hit went wide for a side out and Tober followed with a thunderous kill for a 21-11 lead. Hansen added another kill to get Globe within three points of the set but Miami continued to fight.

Tober had another kill for a 23-15 lead and another Goss error put the Lady Tigers at set point. Miami’s Layla Thompson staved off a set point with a big block at the net but the Lady Vandals committed a hitting error to hand the win to the Lady Tigers.

In the third set, the two teams were evenly matched to start with multiple ties. Miami started to pull ahead, forcing Globe into a timeout. Trailing 19-15, Globe made a run behind a Pichardo kill, a Satter ace and a Hansen tip.

Globe tied the set at 20, then pulled ahead after Miami’s defense watched a free ball return land inside the baseline for a 21-20 lead. Miami called a timeout but committed back-to-back errors leading to another timeout.

The Lady Tigers committed two errors to allow Miami within 23-22, but Hansen put away a kill for set point and the ensuing hit by Miami’s Demetria Dosela was into the net.

“We came out executing in game one and two,” said Globe head coach Lisa Hansen. “They have started to work better as a whole. Our serving was better and we didn’t give up. We struggled but we came back to win.”

Globe improved to 6-6 on the season. The Lady Tigers swept the Lady Vandals in a tournament earlier this season to finish the season 2-1 against their rivals.

Miami head coach Jaymie Hooke-Swift declined a post-game interview.
