Lady Tigers prevail over ALA-Anthem South

Posted

The Globe Lady Tigers knocked off the ALA-Anthem South Lady Titans, 42-41, in front of a large crowd at Tigers Gymnasium while facing adversity.

“We had a strong feeling that we could come in and get a win towards the end of the season,” said Globe head coach Emily Belvado. “We have been plagued with injuries; I only have four actual varsity players right now and the rest are JV. I have three starters sitting on the bench and they’re done for the season, which is unfortunate.”

The Lady Tigers held a 32-23 advantage with 4:56 left in the third quarter. After an ALA free throw, Kara Casoose scored a basket to push Globe to a 10-point lead. A three-pointer and drive propelled the Lady Titans just before the end of the third quarter.

Globe led 36-31 heading into the final quarter of action.

ALA-Anthem South got an early steal and converted it for an easy layup to start the fourth. Globe struggled early in the quarter but ended their drought with 4:30 left in the game when Precious Bendle scored on a layup.

The Lady Titans hit back-to-back three-pointers to take a 39-38 lead with 2:45 remaining. Another layup built a three-point lead. Down the stretch the Lady Tigers missed four straight free throws, but on their fifth attempt Casoose knocked it down to close within two.

Globe had a chance to tie the game, but Arianna Gonnie missed two shots from the free throw line; however, Bendle scored on a drive and the Lady Tigers called time out with 37 seconds left.

The Lady Titans  turned the ball over and Bendle was fouled with 21 seconds remaining. She connected on 1-of-2 from the charity stripe for a 42-41 lead. Following an ALA timeout, Casoose came up with a steal and the Lady Tigers held on for the win.

Leading Globe was Casoose with 13 points; Gonnie added 10.

“It was entertaining (with the big crowd) and our basketball IQ is still growing because we are still so young,” said Belvado. “We will talk about in the locker room; it was the crowd, and it plays a large role to young athletes.”

At press time, the Lady Tigers had one final home game to wrap up the season against top-ranked Gilbert Christian.
