Lady Tigers fall to ALA-Ironwood

The Globe High School Lady Tigers softball team, missing two starters, fell 13-2 at home against the American Leadership Academy-Ironwood Lady Warriors in an evening game at Noftsger Hill softball field last week.

“Our senior catcher hurt her knee and our sophomore had a concussion, so they were out tonight,” said Globe head coach Frank Grice. “Our sophomore catcher, Alexis Payne, did pretty good; she doesn’t have a lot of experience at the varsity level but I thought she did good.”

ALA- Ironwood jumped to an early 4-0 lead after the first inning. In the top of the second, the Lady Warriors hammered two home runs, scoring three runs and two runs, respectively.

With a commanding 9-0 lead through the first two innings, ALA-Ironwood kept the Lady Tigers on their heels when batting.

“We were doing good until the home runs,” said Grice. “We swapped pitchers, slowed them down for a little bit. We changed pitchers again and gave up a couple runs but I’m proud of the way the girls played.”

Trailing 14-0, the Lady Tigers tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the game. Khylee Tulk hit a double to right field, scoring Arianna Gatewood and Teagan Mercier.

“We are doing better than expected but after watching them play, I think we should have beaten Coolidge and played closer against Ben Franklin,” said Grice. “Overall, I am very proud because we lost six starters from last year. We are doing good and we have a strong program; our junior high team is doing really good.”

The Lady Tigers are 12-12 on the season. They have two region games remaining, against San Tan Foothills on April 20 at 6 p.m. and Gilbert Christian on April 24, also at 6 p.m.
