The Globe High School wrestling team competed at San Carlos High School last week. The Tigers were joined by the Thatcher Eagles, San Carlos Braves, Valley Union Blue Devils and San Manuel Miners.
“We have a combination of new wrestlers and old wrestlers this season,” said Globe coach Ruben Duarte. “There are 14 weight classes and if you don’t have them filled it determines wins or losses for a team.”
Duarte said his team focuses on their individual matches and does not get caught up in team points because they don’t fill the full 14 weight classes.
Globe senior Gabe Gonzales is a two-time state champion and is eyeing a third championship this season.
“My performance was pretty good, I’d say, and I think my season is going well,” said Gonzales. “I’ve gotten a lot better and I’m pretty confident going into the season.”
Another senior, Anasco Sanchez, is working his way back into the sport after being sidelined with an injury last season.
“As a senior I feel like this is my last shot to do something big and it has driven me to give my all into this season,” said Sanchez. “The wrestling season has already been filled with ups and downs.”
The Tigers wrestling team’s next scheduled event is the Central Arizona Wrestling Classic.
