Center for the Arts unveils a bounty from the vaults

Posted

This month the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts opened up its vaults and discovered an array of artworks, a large portion of them now for sale in the CVCA’s south gallery room.

The newly found works will be featured there until September 1, after which they will return to the vaults.

The seven vaults were constructed in 1906 for the original Gila County Courthouse, now home to the CVCA. Each vault had its own unique purpose; some held money, others legal documents.

After reconstruction, the vaults were generally repurposed for storage. One of the four on the CVCA’s main floor serves to hold donated works or pieces that are out of rotation. Some of the works have remained at CVCA over the years, with artists moving away or donating their remaining pieces. As a result, a number of unshown works accumulated in the south vault; these have been pulled out for the month of August.

The center’s September gallery show will focus on printmaking, and they have invited anyone who is or knows a printmaker to bring in their artwork – including woodcut, etching, engraving, lithography, linocut, screen printing and the like. No membership is required. The center will receive a 30% commission on any sales made. Items should be brought in by Wednesday, Sept. 4, with the main event coming First Friday, Sept. 6.

The Cobre Valley Center for the Artis is open Monday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
