Bullion Plaza approaches centennial

Posted

March 17 marks the 100th anniversary of the Bullion Plaza School building, now home to the Bullion Plaza Cultural Center & Museum, in west Miami.

Bullion Plaza School opened to Mexican-American and Apache grammar school students on March 17, 1924. The Arizona Silver Belt reported that Clara England, “one of the pioneer teachers of the community,” was in charge of the new facility, which began with nine teachers. The school remained segregated until the 1950-51 school year, when Anglo students began to attend. Bullion Plaza continued to serve students until March 1994 – just shy of 70 years – when it was shut down because of structural damage.
