The San Carlos Tribal Fire Use and RTRL Programs, in cooperation with other Tribal Interdisciplinary Team members, are proposing to implement a number of vegetation restoration projects in the northwest corner of the Reservation, approximately 108,000 acres. These projects would focus on increasing grasses and reducing fire hazard in woodlands and grasslands. Treated areas will have increased forage for cattle and wildlife, less soil erosion, and provide economic opportunities to Tribal members for harvesting and collecting firewood. Some boundary projects may be completed in a collaboration with the Tonto National Forest.
A public scoping meeting for the environmental assessment and review process will be held on Wednesday, April 24 at 6 p.m. at the Tribal Forestry conference room to discuss the project, its parameters, project alternatives, and impacts on the environment. All Tribal members are welcome to come and participate. If you have questions regarding this meeting, or would like to comment directly, feel free to contact Alan Rose, RTRL Planner, at 928-475-2326, or by email at arose@forestry.scat-nsn.gov
