Holy Angels Catholic Church in downtown Globe will celebrate its 100th anniversary in September.
The public is invited to discover all the rich history of the Catholic church in Globe, and the Holy Angels church in particular, at the First Friday program on Friday, Sept. 7, from 6:30-8 p.m. at Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum.
The evening will feature two presenters, Bob Bigando on the history of the Catholic church from 1876 to 1976, and Lorraine Reves on the more recent history.
Representatives of the Catholic church began visiting Globe as early as 1876. They met in odd places, including an adobe shack on Hill Street. The first church was a wooden structure purchased from the Baptists in Globe, where mass began to be held in 1901, called Sacred Heart Church. The beautiful church as it is today was built in 1918, with the first mass held on Sept. 18, 1918.
Bigando wrote a booklet in 1976 for the 100th anniversary of the Catholic church in Globe, called “Holy Angels Catholic Church: The Catholic Church in Globe, Arizona, 1876-1976,” and copies will be available for anyone who might want one for $10 each.
First Friday programs are hosted collaboratively by Gila County Historical Museum in Globe and Bullion Plaza Cultural Center and Museum in Miami. The programs are always free to the public.
Donations given help to defray the cost of utilities, and help to bring other quality programs to the Globe-Miami community.
