A 1977 ASA Class A National Champion – Albert “Boydie” Mercado

We met Albert Mercado, known as Boydie, when we played fastpitch softball in Miami, Arizona. Boydie’s aspirations and goals played a major part in our team winning the National Championship title in Nashville, Tennessee in September 1977. Boydie was awarded first team all-tournament and most valuable player.

Boydie was a special individual and, from what we remember, an attentive man who took it all in. He wasn’t bothered by competition; he embraced it and gave 100% to us and the game. He studied the strengths and weaknesses of opposing teams and shared his insight while praising the team for our performances, and genuinely loved the game. His energy was contagious. It  was truly an honor for all of us who played with Boydie. He was an amazing individual whom we remember fondly.

To Nora and son Eric and family, our deepest condolences. Our team has lost our most valuable player.

Love and prayers to you,
