New Odyssey part of Community Concert series

Posted

Globe — The Globe-Miami Community Concert Association has the pleasure of offering six concerts for the 2017-18 Concert Series. This will be the 63rd season.

The multi-talented New Odyssey will be the fifth performance on March 23, 2018 at the High Desert Middle School Auditorium.

New Odyssey is a cover band from Chicago playing all types of music from across the decades, including today’s top hits (playing everything from the Bee Gees and Beethoven to the Blues Brothers and the Beatles). These songs are performed on 30 different musical instruments, including a pocket trumpet, accordion, sousaphone, melodica, banjo, and bass trumpet, just to name a few.

They have been together for more than 30 years, playing venues as diverse as performing arts theaters and corporate events to festival beer tents.  New Odyssey is prepared for anything.

Three guys – 30 instruments – one heck of a good time.

Gary Todd, drummer and comic, has been involved in show business since age 2, when he started performing as an acrobat with his family act “The Tumbling Todds.” As well as singing and performing on more than 15 musical instruments, Gary is absolutely hilarious, outlandish, and totally unpredictable.

Michael Jay began singing and playing guitar at age 12. By the time he was 21, he was playing bass, composing music for his own bands and performing alongside national recording artists. Michael has done TV and radio commercials, was musical director of a local play, is involved in music ministry at his church, and as a personal highlight, sang the National Anthem for the Chicago Cubs. As well as playing 10 instruments, Michael is the vocal strong point of the band.

Gary Polkow began his piano training at age 7. By age 8 he was rewriting and performing traditional classical children’s pieces. His list of credits includes film credits, synthesizer sound design, music and choir director, as well as the musical director of New Odyssey.

This season will again hold three concerts in the Miami High School Auditorium (MHS) and three concerts in the High Desert Middle School Auditorium (HDMS).   All performances will begin at 7 p.m.

• Oct. 10 at High Desert Middle School Auditorium:  The Southwest Surfers - relive or learn about the Beach Boy era and those golden oldies.
