Miami Unified District reports ringworm and impetigo

Posted

Along with a number of other schools in the area and in our sports leagues, we’re seeing some students with ringworm and impetigo. These are common fungal or bacterial skin infections. Up to 20 percent of the population may be infected by ringworm at any given time, and playing contact sports is a major risk factor.

Prevention measures include keeping your skin clean and dry, frequent hand washing and not sharing clothing or equipment with others. Treatment is usually by an antifungal or antibacterial ointment that you can obtain from your doctor.

If your child shows symptoms of ringworm or impetigo, please get them to a medical professional. The ointment works quickly. Students will need to stay home during the first 24 hours of the ointment, and out of sports practice for the first 72 hours.

We are monitoring at-risk athletes and have implemented an enhanced regimen of cleaning locker rooms, uniforms and equipment.

Thank you,

The administration of the Miami Unified School District
