Miami holds meet-and-greet for police chief candidates

Posted

On the evening of June 26, preceding the meeting of the Town Council, Miami held a public meet-and-greet for the final police chief candidates. Only one candidate, Louis Scichilone, was able to attend; illness kept the other candidate home.

The major concern was that Scichilone lives in the East Valley. He answered that it would be on him to make sure he is in Miami when needed. The keys to making the situation work would be training officers and making expectations known. A question about his motivation for applying for the position evoked the answer that he grew up in small towns and is looking for a more community-centered area without the drama found in the Valley. When asked whether he was prepared to lead law enforcement in a small town, he responded that ASU has many different culture groups and police there must adapt to all of them.

Scichilone closed the session with a brief campaign speech listing his biography (originally from Boston, US Army, 20 years in Arizona), experience (Arizona State University Police Department since 1996, commander of 90 sworn officers plus civilians for 11 years) and again emphasizing his intent to move to the Miami area.

Following the meet-and-greet, the Town Council meeting was filled with good news.

Tom Foster reported that Bullion Plaza Museum and Cultural Center received a grant from BHP. Combined with funds provided by the Museum and the Town of Miami, there is enough to triple recoat the roof of the building. He hopes the project will be completed before monsoon season.

Council approved moving forward with JBS Roofing repairing the entire roof on the Copper Mountain Transit Building under the Mohave Cooperative Purchasing Contract. The projected time frame for completion is 30 days. However, delays may occur. The same contractor will also be working on the Bullion Plaza roof.

Council also approved the adoption of a branding logo for the Town of Miami. (The goal of branding logos is to create easily identified symbols for municipalities, corporations, etc.)

During Reports/Recognitions Town Manager Alexis Rivera said he had a successful meeting with the Army Corps of Engineers on the Bloody Tanks Wash project. He also said sealing cracks in downtown roads is scheduled for the first two weeks in July.

Melinda Baeza, the coordinator of Copper Mountain Transit, reported that passengers for fiscal year 2022-2023 (through May) increased by 40% over ridership for the previous fiscal year. For May 2023, ridership included 542 passes and 1,218 fares.

County Supervisor Tim Humphrey spoke about the lack of public transit access to the new Globe pool during the Call to the Public. The Central Arizona Governments is working on a county-wide transit plan. New routes can be added ahead of time, but require approval from the Arizona Department of Transportation.
