Globe and Miami teams merge to keep soccer competitive

Posted

The Globe High School soccer season started with a home match against San Miguel Tucson on Tuesday, Nov. 26. Both Globe and Miami schools are participating as one team this season, as the Globe Tigers. The boys team has about 13-15 student athletes, two who are from Miami. The girls team has about the same participation level. High school soccer plays a 12 game season; with Coolidge, Florence, Thatcher and others in direct competition with Globe. The next match will be home as the Globe Tigers host Lincoln Prep, out of Chandler, on Wednesday, Dec. 4. The girls team starts their game at 4 p.m. and the boys team starts their game at 6 p.m. Admission is free. You can support the team by purchasing food and beverages at the well supplied snack bar. The soccer season began in November and will end on Jan. 30. The home games are played at the Globe High School - Harbison Field.

Girls Soccer comes out kicking

The Globe High School soccer season started with the girls match verses San Miguel Tucson. Both teams started fast with San Miguel landing the first goal. Globe›s first score of the game, and the season,  happened within 20 minutes of the first half. Alexis Gatewood performed a well placed kick after breaking away on a one on one. This tied the game at 1-1. The Globe Tiger Soccer Girls came out kicking hard. After falling back 3-1, Matty Volker gave the Tigers another goal to put the score at 3-2, with 16 minutes left in the game. However, this would come up short as San Miguel Tucson was able to play their game and obtain that decisive fourth goal to seal the win. Not a bad showing for first year head coach Barry Schwenk and his team. Without hesitation the girls planned a practice for 9 a.m. the next day. Their next match is at Globe when they host Lincoln Prep out of Chandler. Wednesday, Dec. 4.

Looking for positives in pressing play

The one thing head soccer coach Scott Hatch did not have on Tuesday, Nov. 26, was an extra player. Soccer fields 11 players and every man was on the field to start the game at 6 p.m. The Globe Tigers were hosting San Miguel Tucson for the opening soccer match of their season and it would not be easy. San Miguel was practiced, experienced and hungry from the start. Globe was not surprised about their mismatches and seemed to have a game plan to handle it. Then, an injury to a key player. Already down by three scores, Globe would have to play with 10, instead of 11 players. After a few minutes of exhausting play Coach Hatch called up one of his younger players, who was working a sideline job, to come in and play on the spot, giving the team 11 players again. The score ended up one sided, 11-1, but the tough play of Globe was noticeable. As Trey Satter put it, Globe’s lone goal scorer, “We did a good job even though we were short players. We played to the end and never gave up.”
