Don’t blame the victims

Posted

EDITOR: I’ve heard a lot from the City of Globe, its mayor, the council and its law enforcement.

Cristi Licano is my friend. I also frequented Jammerz Bar often. I agree what has happened is a terrible tragedy that took three good lives from our community and the business that I know Cristi and I loved.

I’m appalled at the rumors I have heard in the news and in our streets that our officials won’t face or comment on.

I can only hope you allow me a chance to address what needs to be said in order for me to heal.

First, it’s my belief this community thinks Mr. Hunt’s BAC was too high, therefore the bartender is at fault. Think this through — we know he aimed and killed three. We know he drove to San Carlos, went into a hospital to see a friend, at some point was arrested on different charges.

We know he didn’t come back to Globe ’til Nov. 15. We have to ask, at what point was high blood taken? In my opinion, not enough info to even consider this to be true.

Second is the rumor of how Cristi and Scott were behind the wood fence smoking a bowl of weed, thereby not having eyes on the bar, allowing this tragedy to happen, causing Jammerz to lose its license.

To those who own the bar and each and every family involved, including the Hunts, I am so sorry. They won’t be forgotten ever.

However, enough is enough. What’s Globe, Miami, San Carlos Strong really mean?

All I see is this community placing blame where it doesn’t belong, and in doing so ruining the reputations of my good friends and my hangout.

I for one can tell you, through my own experiences at Jammerz, that Cristi, Scott and every other employee there has always been professional. Not one of them has stepped behind the wood fence to smoke anything ever, nor have any of them drank any alcohol behind the bar on or off shift — which I’ve seen elsewhere — and at no time has that bar been unattended.

In my opinion, the only prevention was Hunt himself and our community may have to move on without knowing why or how?

So why do you make a bad thing worse?

Gameros, Rambler and Dalley are quoted to say “we have a common interest in job growth, education and our local economy. We need to ensure that our common interests take presence over attempts to create divisiveness” and “our overriding focus has been – and continues to be  our shared aspirations for our families and friends. The singular tragedy of this past Sunday cannot be a barrier to our hopes and dreams.”

Why as a community can’t we come together and stand strong behind those lost and the bar they loved?

Cristi will be missed at Jammerz by everyone. Though she was off duty, that was and is her life. Not only did she tend to the bar and its patrons, she took pride in being Jammerz head coach on their softball team.

Jammerz came to be one family’s hopes and dreams.

Shame on this community for standing strong in the blame game and not standing strong behind all our victims.

I feel not only did my friend lose her life in this tragedy, our community is going to take her spirit, too.
