A company owned by a City of Globe fireman, and which employs local and retired firefighters, will be taking on cleanup and maintenance along the Globe-Miami corridor of U.S. Highway 60.
Allegiance Builders, owned by Globe firefighter Lyle Wyatt, has been awarded a one-year, $132,500 landscaping services contract for the GilaPROUD-Hwy. 60 Cleanup and Maintenance Project. The contract provides for a two-person crew to clean up the route twice weekly. Wyatt has worked with Gila County on flood debris mitigation and the Arizona Department of Transportation regarding traffic control, as well as landscaping/hardscaping projects for the U.S. Forest Service Globe and Payson Ranger Districts. He will provide the project with management, equipment, manpower and insurance, and meet monthly with GilaPROUD to review the work done and discuss any changes needed.
On April 5, the County Board of Supervisors voted to increase the county’s pledge for the project’s first year from $10,000 to $53,760, which was the difference between the $132,000 contract amount and the total already funded (see below). However, County Grants Administrator Aimee Staten said the final amount could end up being less than the requested $53,760.
The project is a collaboration between business, cities and towns, and agencies to clean up, maintain and beautify Highway 60 through Globe and Miami. In February 2020, representatives from Cobre Valley Regional Medical Center, the City of Globe, Gila County, Freeport Mc-MoRan, BHP Mining, Capstone Mining and the Southern Gila County Economic Development Agency met to discuss the need for cleanup and maintenance of the route, as well as funding commitments. They agreed to fund the project as follows: CVRMC $20,000; BHP $15,830; Gila County, City of Globe, Freeport McMoRan, Capstone and SGCEDA $10,000 each; Town of Miami $2,000; and Resolution Copper $1,000.
The county advertised for two positions for the project in late 2020 and early 2021, but did not receive satisfactory applicants. On Nov. 2, 2021 the Board of Supervisors approved a request to advertise a Request for Proposals for a project contractor. A proposal received from Allegiance Builders in November exceeded available funding, and was revised to $132,500 in March 2022, to cover the twice-weekly two-person crew.
