Beloved Winkleman teacher dies of Covid-19

Posted

Kimberley Chavez Lopez Byrd passed away on June 26, less than two weeks after she was hospitalized with Covid-19.

Byrd taught first grade in the Hayden-Winkelman Unified School District. Before testing positive, Byrd was teaching a virtual summer school class with two other teachers. All three teachers came down with the virus.

Byrd, age 61, was admitted to the hospital and put on a ventilator for more than 12 days. Her condition continued to slowly deteriorate before she passed away.

According to reports the three teachers were all wearing masks, gloves, and maintaining social distance.

Byrd worked for the school district for 38 years. And even though she had previously retired, she decided to return to the classroom as a first grade teacher because she missed the job.

Principal Pamala Gonzalez stated, “Losing Mrs. Byrd in our small community was devastating. She was an excellent educator with a huge heart. We find comfort in knowing her story may bring awareness to the importance of keeping our school employees safe and our precious students safe in this pandemic.”
