Sheriff J. Adam Shepherd would like to release the following information regarding a drowning at Fossil Creek near the falls.
On July 21, 2019 51-year-old Gary Gaytano of the Phoenix area was pronounced deceased at the falls on Fossil Creek after he jumped into the water to assist his son who was struggling. The son was helped to shore by Gaytano who then slipped under water and was located at the bottom of the pool a short time later. He was removed from the water by family members where lifesaving effort were attempted.
Gila County Sheriff’s Office responded to the call along with Yavapai County Search and Rescue, Copper Canyon Fire and Arizona Department of Public Safety Ranger Helicopter. Gaytano was pronounced deceased at the scene.
This is an ongoing investigation and more information may be released as it becomes available.
