Friday night the Miami Vandals varsity football team notched their second straight win, defeating the visiting St. Johns Redskins, a fellow Section 2A Black team, 20-13. The Vandals have now won four of their last five games.

Miami led 12-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of touchdown passes by Abram Castaneda, including an 80-yard bomb to Aiden Goss and a long catch-and-run by Deray Mathis. The team went for two-point conversions after each score, but these were unsuccessful.

St. Johns cut the Vandals’ lead in half with six points in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Miami outscored the visitors 8-7, as Castaneda connected with Mathis again, for the final score of 20-13.

Castaneda threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, with one interception; he also rushed for 46 yards on 10 carries. Mathis caught eight passes for 174 yards and two touchdowns, and Goss hauled in four catches for 103 yards and a score.

The Vandals are now 4-3 overall and stand in second place 3-1 in Section 2A Black at 3-1.

Their next game will be another section matchup, October 18 at the fifth-place San Carlos Braves (2-5, 1-2), who did not play Friday.
