As Gila Community College looks forward to implementing a nursing program, the college’s District Governing Board has hired three people to develop such a program for approval by the Arizona State Board of Nursing (AZBN).
Alayna Barr, RN MSN, from the Payson Campus, will take the lead in that development, assisted by Megan Martinez, RN MSN, from the Gila Pueblo Campus. The third member of this team is Roni Collazo, Ph.D. CNE, who will serve as a consultant.
Gila Community College submitted its first proposal application to the AZBN August 15. The application will go to the AZBN Education Committee, then to the AZBN Board. As the college awaits a reply, the team is working on a provisional application; that application is planned to be complete by January 2025.
As that proceeds, the college is also working on institutional accreditation through the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC). If candidacy status is obtained, the provisional application will be submitted to the AZBN. Plans are to submit it early next year, to undergo the same review process as the proposal application. Either application could be returned for corrections or clarification.
