Miami Unified School District placed its schools on lockdown the morning of September 19, due to a phone call falsely claiming shots were fired at Globe High School and that Miami High School would be next.
School district personnel contacted the Globe Police Department, which responded to the report along with the Gila County Sheriff's Office. In a September 19 news release, both agencies stated that the claims were untrue. “There have been no acts of violence, including any shots being fired, or validated threats at any of our local schools.”
Globe Unified School District corroborated this, posting on its Facebook page that Globe schools operated normally with no known threats.
The Globe Police Department said the call appeared to be “a continuation” of similar false reports across the state and the country. “We ask the public not to panic as this is the exact intention of the person making these types of reports.”
The Gila County Sheriff's Office said an investigation has been launched to hold those responsible accountable. Along with the Globe Police, they urged the public to verify information with law enforcement rather than turning to social media.
