The Globe Police Department sponsored a multiagency operation on Dec. 13 and 14, 2023, to identify and locate people involved in child sexual exploitation crimes and human trafficking.

There was some green in the City of Globe’s Christmas stocking this year – green in the form of a $124,846 federal grant the city plans to use to develop a plan to make its streets, particularly Broad Street, safer for pedestrians and “conduct demonstration activities such as a feasibility study of the downtown district corridor using low-cost and recycled supplies such as paint, signage and plastic delineators to inform the development of their Action Plan.”

Santa Claus arrived at Veterans Memorial Park in Miami for the annual Small Town Christmas event Saturday evening, where Mrs. Claus and the elves wait to greet him.

A new prefabricated restroom facility at the Gila County Fairgrounds, part of the county’s ongoing efforts to improve and upgrade the area, is expected to open in the spring of 2024.

Miami resident Ray Webb first appeared at Miami Town Council meetings on Sept. 11 during the Call to the Public. His goal was informing council members of dual problems: property boundary errors in Gila County records, and a new neighbor who, according to Webb, has torn down fences and vandalized properties belonging to multiple owners.

On Tuesday, December 12, the Globe City Council approved the city’s participation in an Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) program that provides funding assistance to public water systems affected by a group of chemicals known as Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances, or PFAS.

Before Saturday’s varsity basketball games between Globe High School and Miami Jr./Sr. High School, the Vandals’ home gymnasium was rededicated to the Vargas family, including longtime coaches the late Dickie Vargas and his son Ken, with an on-court ribbon cutting; members of past Miami championship teams were there for the ceremony.

A longtime native of the Miami/Globe area, Martha Ann O’Leary Vuksanovich passed away on Monday, Dec. 4, 2023, at Heritage Health surrounded by her family.

Paul Baca Tafoya, 77, of Globe, Arizona, peacefully went home to his Lord and Savior on Sunday, Nov. 26, 2023. Paul was born on Nov. 7, 1946, in Morenci, Arizona, to Vidal and Delores Tafoya.
