William Rex Helmer, 80, of Jacksonville passed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born Thursday, Oct. 7, 1937 in Miami, Ariz. to the late Forrest Halverson and Irene Elizabeth Kenton Helmer. Rex graduated from the University of Arizona with a degree in Engineering and was a Vietnam Veteran who proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for more than 21 years. After retiring from the Air Force, Rex continued working for another 20 years at Signs First. He loved antique automobiles, especially his 1930 Model A Ford. He was past president of the Razorback Auto Club and the Central Arkansas Mustangers. He enjoyed flying radio-controlled airplanes, water skiing and boating, and could fix anything. Rex attended Jacksonville First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Light Maintenance Team. Despite losing his father at a very young age, Rex went on to become a successful man in every sense. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 30 years, Sandra Albright Helmer in 1994.
Survivors include his wife of 21 years, Kathleen Hahn Helmer; children, Andrea (Jerrold) Hines of Little Rock, Shane (Sarah) Helmer of Lincoln, Lonny (Suson) Wheeler of Fayetteville, Dean (Jennifer) Wheeler of North Little Rock, Brandon(Barbara) Wheeler of Canterbury, U.K.; grandchildren, Keegan Hines, Sanderson Hines, Rex Helmer, Zachary Helmer, Molly Helmer, Finn Helmer, Sarah Wheeler, Ben Wheeler, Sierra Wheeler, Gavin James, Landon Wright, Pietro Wheeler and Timo Wheeler. Other survivors include siblings, Linda (Paul) Dore of Peoria, Ariz., Wes Berry (Ginger Biddle) of Strawberry, Ariz., and Jim Berry of Miami, Ariz.a; along with several nieces, nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2018 at Jacksonville First United Methodist Church with Pastor Nathan Kilbourne officiating.
