On May 4, more than 200 fourth graders from Globe, Miami and Winkelman descended on Copper Rim Elementary School for the Southern Gila County Water Festival. The interactive community water festival event was part of a month-long celebration of water stewardship and STEM education sponsored by Freeport McMoRan, Capstone Pinto Valley Mine, and Carlota Copper. The Water Festival unit includes teacher professional development, a Water STEM unit implemented by teachers, and culminated in the community-supported Water Festival Education Event. Fourth graders received fun, hands-on lessons about the groundwater system, the water cycle, watershed management and water conservation led by service learning volunteers from community organizations.
