The Miami Vandal wrestling team went toe-to-toe with Division 1 Mesa High School. They lost on points but and tied for wins on Saturday, Nov. 24 at Bullion Plaza in the open air.

Jacob Gonzales won the 120 lb. match. David Pena took the medal for 132. Ryan Tidey won in 145, and Stratton Palmer took the 152. Michael Mowrey won the 195-weight class, and Skyler Guerrero hefted the heavyweight (285-plus) medal.

Coach Andre Blake noted that Mesa, who won the tournament on points because they had more pins, stands a good chance of winning state for Division 1 this year.

“It was just fun watching these kids compete at a higher level and not back down,” Blake said. “And that’s what I like. I know these guys are going to bring the heat every time and I wanted them to not back down.”

David Pena celebrates a victory.
