On their way to unbeaten records in Conference 2A East, the 6-0 Miami Vandals and 7-1 Morenci Wildcats racked up more than 90 runs apiece – but when they met last Tuesday at Miami High School, with first place on the line, high scoring made way for a display of pitching and fielding.
The Vandals entered Tuesday’s contest at 3-0 in section games, and 3-0 would be the final score in their win over the 4-0 Wildcats.
Miami pitcher Ryan Powell went all seven innings, giving up only two hits and striking out 12 batters. On the other side, Morenci’s pitchers and fielders – starting pitcher Daylen Johnson played into the fifth inning before being relieved – held the usually high-scoring Vandals to just five hits. However, Miami was able to score early with runs in the first two innings by Gabe Escobedo, Andre Hayes and Tanner Peery – and those runs provided the final margin of victory.
The Vandals now stand alone atop 2A East at 4-0. Their next section game, at home against Round Valley (0-4 in section play), will be on Tuesday, April 20.
