The Miami football team suffered a 40-16 loss at Benson on Friday night.

The Vandals (1-1) had a tough start to the game, as they faced a 26-0 deficit at halftime. Miami rebounded to outscore Benson 16-14 in the second half.

The Vandals’ first points came in the third quarter, when quarterback Ryan Powell found wide receiver Gabe Escobedo for a nine-yard touchdown pass. Running back Justin Cook added the two-point conversion.

In the fourth quarter, Miami added another touchdown when Powell connected with wide receiver Jamie Pena for a 25-yard score.

“We ran into a team that wanted to win more than we did. Several times throughout the game we gave up when things got tough. They were better than us in all aspects of the game,” said Head Coach Brandon Powell. “We were out-played, out-hustled and out-coached. We will need to improve in all of these if we expect to win this week.”

Miami continues its season on Friday night at 7 p.m., when the Vandals host Arete Prep in their first home game of the season. Arete Prep lost a 58-57 thriller to Glendale Prep in their opening game.
