The Miami Vandals continued their high-scoring ways Saturday, with a decisive win in the first round of the AIA Conference 2A baseball playoffs.
Starting the playoffs at home, the third-seeded Vandals built a 13-2 fifth-inning lead over the 14th-seeded Northland Prep Academy Spartans, and the game was called at that point.
Miami starting pitcher Aidan Guthrey, a sophomore, delivered a strikeout with two Spartan runners on base to end the first inning. The Vandals also turned a double play in the first, one of three they would record in the game.
The Vandals led 3-0 after the opening inning, with sophomore Andre Hayes batting in junior Gabe Escobedo for their first score. Escobedo made it 4-0 in the second with an RBI, then Hayes increased the lead to 5-0 with a home run. Northland Prep scored in the third to make it 5-1, but Miami junior Matt Riddle answered with his own homer. The Vandals then reeled off seven runs in the fourth for a 13-1 advantage; the Spartans scored again in the fifth for a final score of 13-2.
Hayes and Riddle scored three runs apiece, followed by senior Tanner Peery with two. Both Riddle, who went 3 for 3 at the plate, and Peery (2 for 2) batted 1.000, with Peery contributing a double and a triple. Hayes and sophomore Angel Pena each had three RBIs for the Vandals; Escobedo, who relieved Guthrey on the mound in the third inning, also batted in two runners.
On defense, in addition to the trio of double plays the Vandals recorded 15 put outs, nine of them by junior catcher Weezy Koyayesva.
Next up for Miami is a quarterfinals match with the sixth-seeded River Valley Dust Devils, who defeated Chandler Prep in the first round. The game will be played on Miami High School’s baseball diamond at 4 p.m. Tuesday, May 11.
