Miami started with a bang. First, Vandal #10, Brady Bartholomew recovered a Miami on-side kick to set the Vandals up first and 10 on the Braves’ 37. Three bad passes by #11 Ryan Powell and one completed pass later put receiver, #5 Gabe Escobedo into the end zone after a 63-yard touchdown run. The extra point was good. (Score: 7-0 Miami.)

In their possession, the Braves got a yard and then another yard before sophomore, Mario Martinez #24, ran for a first down and quarterback Xavior Classay on a keeper, went up the middle. They worked their way down to the 7-yard line before the Vandals intercepted Classay’s pass and took over on their own 3-yard line.

After an incomplete pass they got out to their own 7-yard line on the ground. An incomplete pass brought it to fourth and six, a situation which might prompt a punt considering the terrible field position Miami was in sitting virtually on their own goal line and even in danger of a touch back if their quarterback got sacked in the end zone. Vandal #11 Ryan Powell answered with a long pass to #5 Gabe Escobedo, on the Braves’ 30-yard line followed by another pass to Escobedo in the end zone making the score 13-0 Vandals with 3:33 left in the first quarter.

In the Braves’ possession, Classay wrung 5 yards by bulling forward like a cross between the Terminator and the Energizer Bunny. Then he passed to Eliah Victor for a first down on the 47-yard line. The Braves brought the ball down to the 35-yard line but at the cost of downs. At fourth down and 3 to go. The Braves got the first down by hook and crook and then Classay connected to Martinez on the 12-yard line.

A face mask against Miami brought the Braves halfway to the goal on the 6-yard line – well within Classay’s reach when he pulled his Gulliver mashing through the tiny denizens of Lilliput routine. The conversion pass did fail, but San Carlos was on the board well before any Vandal second stringers could be swapped in. The Braves had stood toe to toe with the Vandal first string and scored.

With the numbers on the board reading 13-6, the Vandals returned the ball to the 40. Another Powell touchdown pass flew into Escobedo’s arms like a comet into the irresistible attraction of a black hole and the score became 20 to six with the extra point.

Ten minutes 56 seconds were still left in the half when the Braves received the Vandal kick-off. In the next play, quarterback Classay passed long right into the hands of Vandal #10 Brady Bartholomew who bobbled the ball back into the hands of the intended receiver Mario Martinez for a Brave first down.

San Carlos drove on down to the 25-yard line. Classay brought the ball, far side down to a first on the 14-yard line with 9:08 left in the half. Classay went far side again to the 1-yard line, first and goal. One yard. Piece of cake for Classay with 8:46 left in quarter. The Braves rather spectacularly failed to make the 2-point conversion when Classay lost control of the hike and the ball went sailing out to be recovered by Vandal #44 Brian Goss, who Classay was happily able to tackle.

The score was now 20 – 12, but a lot can happen in a few minutes, especially with Powell, Escobedo and their offensive line making it happen. The Braves kicked off to Vandal # 4 who gave the ball to Escobedo who ran the ball all the way to the Braves’ end zone for an 83-yard return. And the score was suddenly 26-12. Powell took the ball in for 2 points. Score 28-12.

After the kickoff and return, the Braves started on their own 31-yard line. Classay went near side for a few yards, tackled by Vandal #55 Javen Badilla, but the Braves picked up a 10-yard penalty which put them at first and 20 yards to go. After an incomplete pass came disaster as Classay’s pass was intercepted.

With the ball in their possession, It didn’t take long for Vandals to make their way from the 15-yard line into the end zone with a pass to Vandal #8, Jayden Goss. They kicked an extra point to move the score to 35-12 with 7 long minutes and 19 seconds left in the half.

Classay got 6 yards on a keeper. Second and 4 yards to go on the 41-yard line. fumble picked up by Vandal #55 Javen Badilla.

The Vandals got the ball first and 10 on the Vandal 38-yard line. There was no second down. The Vandals went into the end zone via the Powell to Escobedo pipeline.

Due to Powell’s deadly aim, the Velcro arms of his receivers, the scurrying ball carriers and their blockers, the third quarter started with a score of 42-12.

In the first minute of the third quarter, though, the score became 48-12. After a couple of minutes and a fourth down stand or two, the score was 54-12 and the clock started running continuously so that the ten minutes and 51 seconds left in the third quarter were really the amount of time left in the quarter. And the 12-minute fourth quarter lasted 12 or so actual minutes.

Still Powell and his juggernaut chugged, flew, and scampered on to a final score of 74 to 12.

Most pictures of Powell throwing a pass show him in the clear behind his offensive line. He threw many long complete passes on the fourth down.

Near the end of the game the announcer declared that Ryan Powell had exceeded the 2A record for the most touchdown passes in one game.

At one point also, Vandal #5 Gabe Escobedo took a handoff and raced to the near side.

No joy, so he raced back to the far side, and evading Brave attackers all the while, he turned and ran down into the end zone.
