The girls’ basketball program at Miami has struggled for a few years now. The three wins that the varsity has so far have come with great appreciation. In the past 2-3 years Miami has only won that many games. The girls know what it is to work all season for little results. So, the results of a 3-5 record feel pretty good right now. It is Freddy Rios’ first year coaching the Lady Basketball Vandals. Coach Rios has over 14 years of experience coaching at the high school level and it shows in his teams play. Just like any other sports, Coach Rios knows the value of growing the program with experience and education. That is why his JV program has its own coach, Janet Acevedo.
The Junior Varsity Lady Basketball Vandals have as many players this year as the entire varsity squad had last year. “This is because we have something like 7 Freshmen girls. And these kids can play man,” revealed JV Coach Acevedo. This past week they had 2 wins to 1 loss. They managed to defeat both San Miguel (Tucson) and Superior but had a crushing loss to Cibecue. The JV squad plays the JV squad of their opponents at about 2:30 p.m. on most game days.
