A traditional Apache Gloscho hunting and cooking is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, March 2. The hunt and cooking is sponsored by the San Carlos Apache Culture Center Museum, the Natural Resources Apache Foods Program and the Apache Tradition and Culture group.

The hunt will be led by Twila Cassadore.

Cassadore recommends the hunt to be away from places where people live, and she states winter and early spring are the best time to hunt Gloscho. She also says the group can also look out for wild onions and spinach, which will be in season by that time. Gloscho use to be part of the Apache diet providing proteins for an active life. Gloscho is the Apache name for desert woodrat.

The hunt will be free to San Carlos Apache tribal members, and it will be $5 for non-San Carlos Apache members. In addition to the $5 fee, non-tribal members will need to pay a $10 access fee to go to the area of the hunt.

Potential participants can call San Carlos Apache Recreation and Wildlife at 928-475-2344 for information on purchasing the access fee.

It is suggested that hunters wear hiking shoes or boots, denim jean pants, gloves and long sleeve shirts. Also, bring snacks and water while on this expedition. A waiver by participants will need to be signed to go on the hunt.

Call the San Carlos Apache Culture Center Museum at 928-475-2894 for information on this hunt and cooking
