PIMA — The Globe High School Tiger wrestling team attended the 2017 Annual Gila Valley Wrestling Invitational in Pima, on Dec. 1 and 2.
The Tigers performed exceptionally well and were praised for their great athleticism and sportsmanship by wrestlers and coaches from the opposing teams and by referees during and after the tournament.
The Tigers faced many of the toughest wrestlers in the state.
Freshman Seth Durbin faced nationally ranked senior, Blake Wene from Arizona Lutheran High School in the 120 pound class championship round and lost to a fall in the second period. Seth finished the tournament second place overall with a record of 8 wins and 2 losses.
Senior Cutter Burgett faced experienced junior Jeb Schysm from Pima High School in the 126 pound class championship round and wrestled into the third period winning the match by major decision. Cutter finished with a first place overall baasting a record of 10 wins and no losses. When Senior Cody Burgett faced experienced junior Ethan Bigman from Arizona Lutheran High School in the 132 pound class championship round, he out wrestled and pinned Bigman early in the second period. Cutter finished with a first place overall and a record of 10 wins and no losses.
Sophomore Luke Burgett had faced a strong weight class and after his first and second losses, he was bound and determined to work extremely hard to make his way back into the tournament to place. Luke was faced with Jon Althoff from Arizona Lutheran High School in the semi-finals and placed third after Althoff forfeited the match due to injury.
Senior Riley Cline dominated the 182 pound weight class at the tournament, winning 9 of his matches by pinning his opponents early in the first or second periods and by out scoring Miguel Vasquez from Willcox High School for a total of 10 wins and no losses.
Coach Duarte proclaimed “Congratulations to the 2017-2018 Globe High School Wrestlers for their dedication and hard work.”
