Tigers travel to Wilcox

WILCOX — The Globe Tiger wrestling team participated in the 2017-2018 AIA sectional (D4S2) wrestling tournament held at Wilcox High School on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Freshman Seth Durbin wrestled in the 120 pound class.  He received a bye in his first round and in the quarter finals he went against Hunter Moritz from Santa Rita. Seth won the match by fall. In the semi-finals he wrestled David Pena from Miami and won by fall. Seth went on to the 1st place match against Morenci’s Cory Cota and early into the second period Seth was subjected to a painful arm injury which ended the match by injury default. Seth ended the tournament in 2nd place.

Senior Cutter Burgett wrestled in the 126 pound class. He received a bye in the 1st round and in the quarter finals Cutter wrestled Bisbee’s Sergio Montoya. Cutter won the match by decision 8-1. In the semi-finals Cutter  lost to Morenci’s Ruben Casillas by fall. In the consolations semi-finals, Cutter wrestled Pima’s Jeb Schysm and won by fall. In the 3rd place match Cutter wrestled Bisbee’s Sergio Montoya and lost by major decision 9-1. Cutter ended the tournament in 4th place.

Senior Riley Cline wrestled in the 182 pound class. He received a bye in the quarter finals. In the semi-finals Riley wrestled Pima’s Dillion Jones and won by decision 6-4.

Riley went on to the 1st place match against Morenci’s Jacob Viera and lost by major decision 12-3. Riley ended the tournament in 2nd. Place.

Other wrestlers who participated in the tournament were Cody Burgett, Luke Burgett, Jonathan Ortega and Jacob Jost. All wrestlers who placed in the top four in their weight classes were entered into the AIA state wrestling tournament being held at the Prescott Valley Event Center on February 9th and 10th.
