Tigers vs Bulldogs
The first quarter did not go in favor for the Tigers on both sides of the ball as well as special teams. Tigers offense did have some moments as Robert Mikeworth connected to Jaren Maybury on a completion and with Cody Burgett having some power runs up the middle, however converting on 3rd was unsuccessful. The defense looked good in some areas, with a highlight being Braden Dalton penetrating the line making a play in the backfield, however Globe gives up a 30 plus yard touchdown run. A special teams punt (coming after a 3 and out by the Tigers) was blocked by the Bulldogs setting them up at Globes 12 yard line at the end of the first quarter, things were just not going good for the Tigers.
The 2nd quarter was full of drama, emotions, and injuries. Bulldogs get the upper hand to start things off with a toss back good for a 12 yard touchdown (21 to 0 Bulldogs). An injury to the Tigers starting quarterback Mikeworth takes him out for the remainder of the game. Martine Reed takes command as he comes to take the snaps for globe. Reed definitely had some positive moments showing that he can scramble around in the backfield extending plays and having a beautiful pass to Cline for a 26 yard completion.
Tigers also started giving some touches to Avrium Curiel who had positive yardage, but with a decent quarter of play for the tigers what stood out most was the injuries. After losing the starting quarterback, another injury took out a young athlete as he was transported by EMS to the hospital, and on the very next play another star player was taken out with a knee injury. I believe this was a game where the officials lost control early. Prior to the last 2 injuries I witnessed a late hit on Globes quarterback as he ran out of bounds where contact was made despite being out of bounds by 2 good yards. The official then engaged the Safford player and told him “know where you are on the field” but no flag?
This was just one of the cheap shots dished out by Safford in this game, and none where penalized until Tigers Coach Morales confronted the Bulldogs coach. It is unknown to me the words that were
exchanged but one can assume that coach Morales was standing up for his team by confronting Safford coach about the type of playing his players were dishing out.
With a hostile Bulldog team, came a hostile Bulldog crowd, and Bulldog coach. During the confrontation “Get him coach” was heard being yelled from a Bulldog fan, and again not sure the words that were being exchanged but whatever the Safford coach said to Coach Morales, led to his ejection of the game.
3rd Quarter came with a different Tiger team. Although the Tigers allowed a touch down early on, the Tigers offense on there 2nd possession moved the ball down field. Reede making plays with his feet and completions to Cline and Maybury. Also making there presence known was Curiel and Burgett still getting the positive yardage. The yardage ends up with a first and goal from the 2 yard line. Reede with the keep gains 1 yard and on the next play finishes it off with an athletic quarterback keep extending the ball across the plain for a Tigers touchdown! Defense comes out on the field (looking pumped up after the Tigers touchdown) penetrating the line and making plays forcing the Bulldogs to punt.
Reede showing determination with multiple quarterback keeps continued to get first downs and after a couple incompletes to Maybury, Maybury eventually breaks free where the Reede/Maybury duo connect for a 45 yard Tiger touchdown! The defense for the Tigers looked flawless as they didn’t allow any more points and showing they can hit hard as well finishing off the game with a swarm of Tigers making a play in the backfield. Final score 28 to 13 Bulldogs.
Tigers will face Benjamin Franklin Friday, Oct. 27 with kickoff at 7 p.m. This will also be senior night for football, spiritline, and JROTC at 6:15 p.m.
