Tigers face off against Braves in epic grid battle

When Globe High School met San Carlos High School on Friday, Sept. 28, Globe High School had won two of five games including a 49-40 game against Tombstone, a game San Carlos lost against the same team. San Carlos had only won one out of five for the season. The game itself did go to Globe 23-16, but it was never a Bambie vs. Godzilla event.

Neither team was able to turn a possession into a touchdown in the first quarter. The Braves received the first kick-off but almost didn’t get control of the ball when a Tiger jumped on his team’s on-side kick. The officials decided the kick didn’t meet standards for one that Globe could claim and gave the ball to the Braves over the vehement objections of the Globe coach.

The Braves took over on their own 42 but a holding penalty drove them back to the 32, so they were first and 20. DeAndre Dude ran the ball back to the 47 on the near side before getting spectacularly hit by t10, and t 3 with the help of t14 and t13. Sneezy made a couple of yards of the middle and then secured a first down on the Braves’ 45.

San Carlos was knocked back to the 38-yard line for delay of game. At third and 11, Eliah Victor threw two incomplete passes and the Braves lost the ball on downs.

Taking over on the Braves’ 46, Quarterback Caden Hanson threw an incomplete pass and then handed off to Seth Durbin who advanced the ball in a zig-zag field reversal that had Braves chasing and guessing. Durbin ran again for a first down before being tackled by San Carlos 77, Artimeo Upshaw, and Braves 5, Joshua Jackson. The Tigers gained yardage but stalled until they were on fourth down with 7 to go at the 37. They went for it and had to turn the ball over to the Braves on the 36.

A few minutes into the second quarter, two fumbles and a false start left the Braves in possession, third down and 10 to go on their own 37. Then they threw a high arcing pass right into the arms of a well-placed Tiger, who ran it back to the Braves’ 25.

Charles Mendoza Jr. and Palicio Ramos stopped Seth Durbin after a gain of four yards. In a keeper, Durbin advanced the ball three more yards before a hand-off to Luke Burgett brought the first down. Then the Tigers ran out of downs, but the Braves were pushed back to their own eight yard line by a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct.

With 11 minutes to play in the second half, they had the ball. The Braves worked the ball out to the 26 yard-line and then to the 38 for a first down. Eliah Victor got a hike he couldn’t handle and although Palacio Ramos was able to pick it up, he was thrown for a loss by Tiger 80, John Martinez. An unsportsmanlike conduct call against Globe softened the blow and allowed the Braves to advance to the 50 yard line.

Victor then threw a pass that was not intended for Tiger Seth Durbin who picked up blockers and ran the ball down to the Braves 25 yard line. A pass over the middle put Globe on the board. And Globe set up to kick the extra point but kicker Robert Burries Jr. threw a pass into the end zone for two points. Score Globe 8, San Carlos 0.

San Carlos had the ball and worked their way down to the 37 yard line with four yards to go. Xaivior Classay was able to attain a first, but the clock wound down faster than the feet to the goal line, and the chance of an answering touchdown was lost.

Kicking off in the second half, San Carlos tried for an on-side kick, but only left the Tigers with good field position on the braves 40. Joshua Jackson brought down Hansen in a quarterback keeper on the far side. Globe used up two downs before Durbin was able to get into the end zone on the near side. The Tigers decided to kick for the extra point which brought their score to 15.

After a missed kick, Dude fell on another on-side kick, and the braves took over on their 33 yard line. A penalty against the Tigers for putting too many players on the field propelled the Braves out to the 49, and a penalty for a “chop tackle” hit below the knees gave the Braves further yardage ’til they sat on the Tigers 40 yard line with 10 yards to go.

Dude brought the ball to the Tigers 37, Victor advanced it to the 33, and Dude slid into the end zone to bring the score to 6-15.

A carry for the two extra points by Nathaniel Moses made the score 8-15, one touchdown from the lead. The Braves had eight minutes to take the lead with another touchdown with a two point conversion.

But Globe had other ideas. They got the ball on the 37 yard-line via another on-side kick, but after one hard-earned first down, they ran out of downs and elected to punt.

Aided by another penalty against Globe for chop block, the Braves advanced to their own 47, and with Dude’s carry, to the ball to the tiger 47.

Dude gained a few yards and Xaivior Classay moved a pile of defenders far enough for the first on the Tiger 41 yard line. Sneezy carried twice down to the Tiger 34 for a first and 10. The Braves got close to the goal again, when on fourth down they elected to pass and had it intercepted.

Aided by a Brave off-side and hindered by a false start, third down with six yards to go, a pass brought them into the end zone.

They made the two extra points to bring the score to 8-23 for Globe with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter. In 15 plays, Dude and Victor and their blockers hammered their way into the end zone. Nathaniel Moses got in for the two-point conversion, and the Braves were only one touchdown short of the lead, but there was only a minute left in the game, and the Tigers had the ball.

No game changing miracle (or disaster from Globe’s point of view) occurred and the final score was 16-23 for the victorious Tigers, who could roar about their passing game and general team spirit.
