The Apaches and Braves pack the Ft. Thomas Gym for exciting basketball

The San Carlos basketball teams had a mixed week. The girls ran all over Desert Christian, 76-24, and the boys also prevailed against the Eagles, 40-37.

On Thursday, Dec. 5, the little giant Ft. Thomas conquered San Carlos ,68-56 and the 1A Lady Apaches gave the 2A first place Lady Braves a run for their money before losing, 59-67.

Different players shown under different conditions. Heaven Cosen #33 scored a respectable 12 points on Tuesday against Desert Christian, but her score grew to 17 against more formidable Ft. Thomas. Cheridan Gooday, on the other hand, after becoming the high scorer with 21 points against the Eagles, only scored seven against the Apaches.   From Tuesday to Friday Brave, Shania Cassa went from five points to 14 points against the Apaches.

The ladies got to strut their stuff more against a weak Eagle Defense but especially in the first Ft. Thomas game, they hit their free throws. Cheridan Gooday #15 missed one of her free throws in the first game as did Marissa Barrasa.

So in the first game they made 14 and missed only two for 28 good points.

In the second game, the Braves missed seven out of a total of 18 gaining 22 good points at the free throw line.

High scorer, Heaven Cosen #33, missed two free throws against Ft. Thomas as did Alyssa Martin, #12, who scored 15 points against the Apaches. The Apaches must have tired these busy effective offensive and defensive players more than the hapless Eagles.

The boys pulled out a victory against Desert Christian on Tuesday with the help of three three-pointers by Reppert Cassadore III. The score was 33 to 34 with 2 minutes left in the game when Cassadore hit the jack pot three times to pull out the victory. Desert Christian missed their opportunities.

On Thursday, the Boys stood up against Ft. Thomas, winning the first quarter 16 to 15, but they were only able to score 11 points in the second quarter to Ft. Thomas’ 17. Six-foot six senior Latrell Titla made good use of his conditioning on Ft. Thomas’ cross country team, scoring 10 points in the second quarter.

The Braves looked tired coming into the third quarter.

Only John Mull #34, Gerald Phillips III, Malakai Martinez #22 and Cameron Mull scored baskets in the third quarter. Those baskets plus Cameron Mull’s two free throws added up to 8 points as opposed to 19 points for the Apaches.

The third quarter disaster left the Braves behind 54-37 so even though John Mull #34 put in two 3-pointers and three 2- pointers, and Gerald Phillips III, #33 scored a basket and a free throw,  putting them only one point down for play during the fourth quarter, they still lost 68-54.

The stands were packed so the Braves teams were set up on bleachers on the stage, and the cheers of the fans were electrifying as was the joy on Lady Apache Faces when Hailey Hinton’s three point basket put their team ahead briefly.

Looking ahead to the Lady Brave and Lady Apache season one might expect them to go to State at least based on their ability to score when things are not all their way.
